Private legal practitioner and senior member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Lawyer Kwame Jantuah, has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for not adequately fulfilling his duty in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), leaving many Ghanaians dissatisfied.

Several individuals, civil society organizations, public institutions, and advocates have voiced their disappointment, accusing the President of allowing galamsey activities to escalate in local communities, leading to the destruction of numerous water bodies.

Speaking during a discussion on Joy Prime, Lawyer Kwame Jantuah called on the President to consider an outright ban on galamsey and small-scale mining.

While acknowledging the economic benefits and employment opportunities that small-scale mining provides, he emphasized the need for immediate reform.

“Is this the future we want for Ghana? The President should step forward and say, ‘I’m ready to ban small-scale mining and all other forms of galamsey for a certain period.’ Let’s reset the system. There’s money to be made, and jobs in this sector, but we need to bring everyone together to decide how to move forward,” he advocated.
