John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has announced plans to conduct a thorough audit of the Keta Port should he win the presidency. During a recent media engagement in Ho as part of his campaign in the Volta Region, Mahama stressed the need for a detailed evaluation of the port’s progress under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and to chart a clear path forward.
Mahama underscored the importance of a needs assessment before any new port is established between Tema Harbour and the Port of Lomé, emphasizing the need to avoid past mistakes like those seen with the Boankra inland port to prevent it from becoming a “white elephant.”
He stated, “Once I become president, one of my first actions will be to request the feasibility study of the Keta Port. We will share this study with the public, and based on its findings, we can decide the next steps.”
Mahama questioned the necessity of an additional port in the region, given the existing capacities of Tema and Lomé, and highlighted the importance of ensuring any new port serves a specialized function. “We need to assess whether this port will handle different cargo compared to Tema and Lomé and avoid any political games,” he added.
