Today, on July 1, 2024, the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced his decision on a running mate for the upcoming elections.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has selected Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as his running mate. This announcement was made during a meeting with the party’s leadership at their headquarters in Asylum Down, as confirmed by Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organizer, in a social media post.
However, the nomination is subject to approval by the National Council, which holds the final decision-making authority.
Nana Boakye, known affectionately as “Nana B” in political circles, stated, “H.E Bawumia formally informed National Officers of the NPP of his nomination of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as his running mate in the upcoming 2024 General Elections.”
Prior to this announcement, Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s nomination had been presented to the majority caucus of Parliament.
The National Council’s decision will be crucial, and an emergency meeting has been called by the General Secretary of the party, scheduled for July 4, 2024. Both the National Executive Council and the National Council meetings will confirm the flagbearer’s choice of nominee before the party officially announces its ticket for the 2024 election.
