He highlighted that incorporating renewable energy, such as solar power, in schools would not only ensure a consistent electricity supply to enhance the learning environment but also prevent instances where power is disconnected due to unpaid electricity bills.

“Solar energy is derived from a natural source that replenishes at a much faster rate than it is consumed. Together with wind, sunlight serves as an energy source constantly replenishing itself. Solar energy, in particular, is abundantly available and can be harnessed even during cloudy weather,” the Attorney-General stated.

Mr. Dame delivered these remarks at the 114th Speech and Prize-giving Day of Adisadel Senior High School in Cape Coast, Central Region, under the theme: “Powering education through sustainable solar energy.”

Mr. Dame, as the guest speaker, emphasized the significance of renewable energy adoption in schools, citing projections from the UN Climate Change Action Policy that indicate a significant increase in the use of renewable and solar energy in the global power supply system by 2050.

He underscored the critical role of secondary education in the growth, development, and future prosperity of the nation, emphasizing that a well-educated society is essential for progress. Mr. Dame praised the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy implemented by the government, noting it as a significant catalyst for the country’s future.

“The provision of reliable, efficient, and affordable energy is vital for sustaining the Free SHS program,” he remarked.

Additionally, the Attorney-General highlighted that the implementation of the Free SHS policy, which has increased accessibility to education, also implies a rise in energy demands for schools. This acknowledgment further emphasizes the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to meet these growing energy needs sustainably.

Referring to a UN Climate Change action report, Mr. Dame, an alum of Adisadel SHS, highlighted that the rate at which solar energy is intercepted by the Earth surpasses mankind’s energy consumption by about 10,000 times.

Speaking on Ghana’s advantageous geographical position, Mr. Dame emphasized the country’s abundance of solar energy resources. He stressed the necessity for Ghana to capitalize on the sunlight available, especially in boarding senior high schools, to significantly contribute to the energy mix.

Highlighting the broader benefits, Mr. Dame pointed out that solar energy has the potential to generate more job opportunities for the populace.

Acknowledging the initial installation costs, Mr. Dame recommended collaboration, particularly through public-private partnerships, to make solar energy adoption feasible for less privileged institutions.

Mr. Dame extended congratulations to the Headmaster of Adisadel SHS, Samuel Agudogo, for his commendable work, and expressed appreciation to both past and present students of the school.
