Samuel Oko Adjei Raises Alarm Over Soaring SIM Card Prices in Ghana

In an interview with Focus Ghana, Adjei Samuel Oko expressed concern over the rapidly rising costs of SIM cards in Ghana, describing the situation as a pressing issue. He noted that MTN SIM cards are now priced up to GHS 60.00, with Vodafone and Airtel/Tigo SIM cards at GHS 30.00 and above. According to Oko, these increases place a heavy financial burden on Ghanaians, restricting access to essential mobile services.

Oko highlighted that the high prices particularly impact students, workers, and small business owners who rely on affordable telecom services for communication, digital payments, and online transactions. Given Ghana’s commitment to digital transformation, he warned that these price hikes could hinder access to digital services, leaving many disconnected from vital online resources, mobile banking, and digital learning platforms.

He called on the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to address this issue. “The Ghanaian people need affordable mobile access, and these recent price hikes threaten that fundamental right,” Oko stated. He urged the Ministry to investigate the causes of these increases and enforce policies to regulate and ensure fair pricing by telecom operators. “Decisive action is essential,” he added, to prevent this growing cost barrier and support Ghana’s vision of digital inclusivity for all.
