Minister of Energy Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has rejected assertions by some Ghanaians that recent power cuts can be termed as “dumsor” – a local coinage which means, in general terms, power outages due to the inability of the powers that be to keep the electricity on as distinct from power cuts due to minor faults such as faulty transformers.
According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, the recent power outages are due to maintenance routines unlike what happened under former President John Mahama, which was termed dumsor. He insisted that Ghanaians were subjected to dumsor under John Mahama’s presidency.
Speaking on May 3, 2024, during Parliament’s Government Assurance Committee sitting, Dr Opoku Prempeh noted that the era of dumsor was over and that what Ghanaians were experiencing was “dum sie sie – power outages to make for effective maintenance.
“We have gone past the era where we have 72 to 96 days of lights out and six hours of light on. We are the era of “dum sie sie” which is profoundly different from dumsor…Dumsor as inflicted on Ghanaians has only happened as characterised by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s governance.
He is the only President on record that for four years that he reigned, for four years that he ruled, for four years that he governed dum dum dum,” Dr Opoku Prempeh explained.
Many parts of the country are currently experiencing power outages even as the Minister insists there is no dumsor ( load shedding) and therefore there will be no load shedding timetable.
