Police in the Upper East Region have apprehended 30 illegal miners who were found invading the underground mine of Earl International Group Ltd. According to a press release issued by the company on August 12, 2024, these suspects were among over 200 unauthorized individuals who had breached the mine at Shaft 2, Levels 2 and 3.

The statement detailed that the illegal mining activities are severely impacting the company’s operations and posing safety risks. The underground staff have faced attacks from these unauthorized miners, who are often armed and protected by ‘macho men.’ These intruders have been known to take over drilling equipment and steal blasted ore.

The release highlighted that the invasion has intensified over the past four weeks, disrupting operations and creating hazardous conditions. Earl’s Mine Manager, Firibu Salia, expressed concern during a recent meeting with the Chiefs and Elders of Gbane, stating, “The illegal miners are forcefully taking over our mine and acting as if they own the concession. They frequently invade through illegal pits, drive out our workers, and engage in dangerous drilling and blasting activities. We urgently need support from our stakeholders to address this issue.”

Management has been taking measures to counter the impact of illegal mining and ensure the safety of their operations and personnel.
