Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku has expressed his excitement following a standout performance in Istanbul Basaksehir’s UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers against FC Iberia 1999. The Black Stars centre-back played the full match as Basaksehir secured a 2-0 victory, advancing to the playoffs with a 3-0 aggregate score.
Opoku took to social media to celebrate the advancement, posting, “Playoff round. There we land,” after his team’s win. Goals from Krzysztof Piątek and Dimitris Pelkas in the second half sealed the victory for Basaksehir.
Looking ahead, Basaksehir will face St. Patrick’s in the playoff round, with a spot in the Conference League group stage on the line. Meanwhile, Opoku will turn his focus to the Turkish Super Lig as Istanbul Basaksehir hosts Alanyaspor on Sunday night.
Opoku’s strong start to the season is promising for Black Stars coach Otto Addo, particularly with the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers set to begin in September. Ghana’s opening matches in the qualifiers will be against Angola and Nigeria.
