The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reassured the public that despite recent power interruptions, there is no need for a load-shedding timetable. Laila Abubakar, the External Communications Manager at ECG, clarified that the recent power cuts may be due to other factors and emphasized that the infamous ‘dumsor’ phenomenon has not returned.
She assured the public that ECG’s management is diligently working to address the challenges facing the power sector. Abubakar highlighted that power outages are not always a result of load shedding and can be caused by various issues, some of which fall under ECG’s responsibility.
Abubakar further clarified that there are no issues with load shedding, which is often associated with ‘Dumsor’. She emphasized that the term ‘Dumsor’ lacks a clear definition and understanding, making it difficult to implement a load-shedding timetable.
However, John Abdulai Jinapor, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, asserted that the ongoing power outages in various parts of the country stem from financial constraints rather than faulty transformers. He refuted claims by the ECG that the outages were due to transformer repairs, alleging that the root cause is a shortfall in electricity generation capacity.
This situation highlights differing perspectives on the causes of power outages in Ghana, with ECG emphasizing other factors besides load shedding, while some officials attribute the outages to financial constraints and generation capacity issues.
