In an interview with Captain Smart on Onua TV Show, the National Chairman for NDC, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia (General Mosquito), proposed a policy called “Heavy Property Rate on Huge Buildings” to combat corruption in government.
He believes that this policy, which he expects the next president, John Dramani Mahama, to endorse, will help expose those who have looted state funds but cannot deposit them in banks due to scrutiny. By imposing high property rates on extravagant properties, these individuals will be compelled to sell their assets every year to afford the levy, thus exposing their ill-gotten wealth.
Moreover, Hon. Asiedu Nketia highlighted the NDC’s stance on not supporting a coup d’état, as they consider the current Fourth Republic as their brainchild. However, he mentioned that if the NDC comes to power, they plan to address corruption and recover looted state resources similar to the way a military coup would, without resorting to undemocratic means.
Furthermore, he suggested that the current President of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, take all passports from his appointees and conduct searches in their homes.
According to him, this would reveal substantial amounts of money stolen by his appointees, potentially surpassing the IMF’s $3 billion requested by Ghana. He also indicated that this practice should extend to NDC appointees, including himself, to ensure transparency and accountability in the government.
