The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, used the occasion of the 2023 World Press Freedom Day to renew the association’s commitment to seeking justice for slain journalist Ahmed Suale.

Speaking in Accra, Mr. Dwumfour emphasized that the GJA would continue to pressure the Ghana Police Service to complete its investigation into Suale’s murder and submit the docket to the Attorney-General for prosecution. He also urged Ghanaian journalists to come together and fight for a more liberated society, while cautioning them not to entertain politicians or individuals who would make intemperate and provocative remarks.

Furthermore, Mr. Dwumfour warned politicians against abusing journalists and pledged the GJA’s commitment to promoting professional standards in Ghana’s media space. He emphasized that the celebration of World Press Freedom Day would be meaningless if state institutions did not commit to protecting journalists’ rights.

This year’s global theme for World Press Freedom Day is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all Other Human Rights,” while Ghana’s theme for the celebration is “Freedom of Expression: A Driver for all Human Rights for Ghana’s Development.”
