The Minority in Parliament has criticised the government’s 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, describing it as lacking bold and innovative measures to address Ghana’s economic challenges.
Speaking after the presentation of the review, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the opposition would not commend the government for what he called an “uninspiring, same old story.”
According to him, the budget update largely repeated existing policies without introducing new solutions to tackle the concerns of households and businesses.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin argued that Ghanaians expected stronger interventions to reduce the cost of living, support businesses and create more employment opportunities, but the review failed to provide convincing answers to these challenges.
His comments followed the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who highlighted government’s economic recovery efforts, including fiscal reforms, debt restructuring and improvements in macroeconomic stability.
Government officials maintain that the measures being implemented are helping to stabilise the economy and create the foundation for sustainable growth.
The Mid-Year Budget Review provides an opportunity for government to report on economic performance, while Parliament assesses revenue, expenditure and policy implementation.
The debate on the review is expected to continue in Parliament, with lawmakers examining the government’s economic direction and making recommendations before the process concludes.
