The Parliament of Ghana resumes sitting today, Thursday, May 21, marking the start of the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic. Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has outlined a comprehensive legislative agenda covering transport, energy, justice, and national security.

In the transport sector, Parliament is set to review the Maritime and Related Offences Bill following a committee report, alongside updates to Road Traffic Regulations and bilateral air services agreements with Luxembourg, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The energy sector is also receiving significant focus. Lawmakers will consider proposals to revise the legal framework for the National Petroleum Authority, encourage private-sector participation in electricity distribution, establish a Nuclear Power Corporation, and create a dedicated Renewable Energy Authority to oversee solar and wind energy development.

On matters of justice and security, the Interior Ministry is expected to present a Community Service Bill designed to ease prison congestion by introducing non-custodial sentences for minor offences. Parliament will also consider amendments to the National Identity Register law, revisions to parole regulations, and new legislation aimed at enhancing coordination among security agencies.

Additionally, a proposed Code of Conduct Bill, focusing on asset declaration and ethical standards, and consolidated amendments to CI 47, which governs High Court civil procedure, are expected to be tabled before the House.
