The State Transport Company (STC) has announced plans to expand its fleet with nearly 120 new buses by the end of the year, following growing public frustration over long waiting times and the condition of some existing buses.

The announcement comes after a viral social media video showed stranded passengers at various terminals, complaining about prolonged delays and poor service.

Speaking on the issue, STC Deputy Managing Director for Finance and Administration, Nuru Hamidan, acknowledged the operational challenges but stressed that passenger safety remains the company’s top priority.

“We have standards that we follow. What sets us apart from other operators is safety. After every trip, buses undergo proper checks in our workshops before hitting the road again,” he explained.

Hamidan noted that these mandatory technical inspections can contribute to delays at terminals, as buses are only cleared for departure once certified roadworthy. However, he admitted that the current fleet is insufficient to meet growing passenger demand, especially during peak travel periods, leading to overcrowding and longer waiting times.

In recent months, commuters have criticised STC over schedule disruptions, aging buses, and poor communication, some of which was captured in the viral video.

To address these issues, STC is stabilising operations while awaiting the arrival of the new buses. The fleet expansion is expected to improve turnaround times, reduce congestion, and restore efficiency across its intercity transport network.

As an interim measure, the company has partnered with other transport operators to absorb excess passenger demand and minimise disruptions caused by the current bus shortage.

STC, one of Ghana’s oldest public transport providers, continues to operate long-distance services across major towns and selected international routes within West Africa.
