The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, will hold a press briefing on Monday, April 27, at 2:00 PM to update the public on recent developments in Ghana’s electricity distribution sector. The briefing comes in response to significant concerns about the stability and management of the country’s power supply, including the recent fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre and leadership changes at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.
Minister Jinapor will use the briefing to address questions about the fire incident at Akosombo and clarify the steps being taken to address the ongoing challenges within the power sector. His statement is expected to provide more details on the government’s response to the disruptions caused by the fire, as well as offer insight into the leadership shake-up at ECG.
CEO of GRIDCo Suspended Amid Investigations
A major topic of discussion during the briefing will be the suspension of the CEO of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo). This decision follows the fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre, which has significantly impacted the national electricity grid, causing power outages in multiple regions. Minister Jinapor ordered the CEO to step aside to allow for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and its broader implications on the grid. The suspension was confirmed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a Facebook post.
Leadership Changes at ECG
The briefing will also address the leadership shake-up at ECG in the Ashanti Region. This move follows concerns over the region’s ability to effectively manage electricity distribution after the Akosombo fire and ongoing issues in the energy sector.
