The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has underscored the importance of fostering hope, ensuring peace, and upholding justice as fundamental pillars for sustainable development. In his address at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Istanbul, Bagbin emphasized that hope is rooted in confidence in systems that promote inclusive growth, protect livelihoods, and create opportunities—especially for the youth.

He pointed out that true peace goes beyond merely the absence of conflict and must be built on justice, fairness, and resilient institutions.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin highlighted the vital role parliaments play in advancing these ideals, citing Ghana’s experience in parliamentary oversight of environmental policies and social protection initiatives.

Despite Ghana’s democratic stability, the Speaker acknowledged ongoing challenges such as economic inequality, youth unemployment, weak institutional frameworks, environmental degradation, security risks, and emerging concerns around misinformation, cybersecurity, and unequal access to digital technologies.

He further emphasized that Parliament is central to translating national aspirations into tangible laws, policies, and accountability mechanisms through its legislative, oversight, and representative functions.

Bagbin also pointed to government initiatives in education, youth empowerment, and social protection, as well as ongoing judicial reforms aimed at improving access to justice.

In closing, the Speaker called for stronger collaboration and political will, stressing that building a peaceful, just, and hopeful society requires deliberate, sustained efforts to secure a better future for generations to come.
