NDC Appointees Must Emulate Party’s Slogan-Hon Nii Armah Ashitey Cautioned

The concerns of Hon. Nii Armah Ashitey, a former Greater Accra Minister, about the state of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leadership, especially in relation to the party’s slogan and principles of social democracy.

Hon Ashitey stresses that NDC appointees and leadership must align themselves with the party’s core values of social democracy.

This suggests a call for party members to return to the ideals that the NDC was founded on, particularly in terms of fairness, social justice, and a focus on the welfare of ordinary people.

The former minister expressed concern over the growing influence of money in politics, often referred to as “monepocracy.

He pointed out that some individuals use their financial resources to buy positions within the party, undermining the merit-based system.

This, according to Hon Ashitey, leads to a situation where the party is divided between competent and incompetent people.

He advocates for a system where elections within the party should be determined by card-carrying members, not delegates who may be swayed by financial influence.

Hon Ashitey argue that this would make the process more transparent and representative of the actual party base.

He also suggested that appointments to national executive positions should be more balanced, ensuring that they reflect a fair representation of the party and its ideals, rather than just political favors or financial connections.

Reflecting on the late President Jerry John Rawlings’ leadership, Ashittey commended him for his discipline and commitment to ensuring that his appointees were corruption-free.

This might be a subtle call for current NDC leaders to follow in Rawlings’ footsteps in terms of integrity and accountability.

Hon Ashitey voiced his concerns about the negative effects of drug abuse on the youth, advising young people to live decent lives and become productive members of society. “His message is a call to action to steer the youth away from destructive behaviors and towards more positive life choices”.

Hon. Nii Armah Ashitey is calling for a return to the NDC’s founding principles, focusing on social democracy, fairness, and integrity in leadership. He warns against the growing influence of money in party politics, urging a more meritocratic and inclusive process.

Additionally, he calls for more balance in appointments, drawing inspiration from the leadership of the late President Rawlings, while also encouraging the youth to reject drug abuse and embrace healthier, more productive lifestyles.
