Tragedy Strikes as Abandoned Galamsey Pit Drowns Mother and 3 Children at Wassa Dunkwa – Western Region

A 42-year-old woman and her three children have tragically drowned in an abandoned galamsey pit in Wassa Dunkwa, Amenfi West Municipality, Western Region. The children, aged 14 and younger, were her sons and nephew.

According to Green Gold FM reporter Judith Quarcoe, the family had gone to collect firewood near a galamsey site they frequently visited. After gathering their load, the children decided to swim in the water-filled pit. When the mother noticed they were in distress, she rushed to save them but tragically drowned in the process.

The Asankrangwa Police responded promptly, recovering the bodies and transferring them to the Catholic Hospital for autopsy. Quarcoe added that this is not the first such incident, as uncovered galamsey pits continue to pose a deadly risk in the region.

This devastating event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by abandoned mining sites and the urgent need for safety measures in these communities.
