Hon. Shedrach Boakye Yiadom, Assembly Member for the American Town Electoral Area in the Awutu Senya East Municipality, has expressed concerns over deteriorating sanitation conditions in the area, attributing the challenges to irresponsible waste disposal , toilet sewage released into gutters and improper disposal of waste.
Speaking in an interview with BKB , he lamented that ,households with toilet facilities fail to engage proper waste collection services, opting instead to flush waste directly into the drainage system .
“At first, the water appeared to be from bathrooms, and you wouldn’t notice anything wrong unless you examined it carefully,” he stated. “But after closer scrutiny, we found that toilet waste was also being directed into the gutter. We had no choice but to disconnect it.”
He attributed recent complaints about foul odours in the area to this unsanitary practice, noting that it is a key reason the local environment suffers from chronic stink and pollution.
It has also come to his notice that the problem gets worse during the rainy season. Residents tie their refuse in plastic bags and throw them into the gutters, which eventually leads to blockages and flooding,” he added.
He assured residents that he and his leadership team are taking decisive steps to address the situation. “We are actively working to improve the environmental hygiene of the American Town Electoral Area. Education and enforcement will be key to reversing this trend.”
local authorities took swift action to ensure that the illegal connection was removed and instructed the residents to re-route only bathroom water, in compliance with sanitation regulations. He added that the Assembly would continue to monitor the situation closely and vowed to deal with commuters who flout Assembly sanitation bye-laws.
“We are not relenting. If we receive any further reports or even a hint that the foul smell has returned, we will resume full investigations and take the necessary steps again,” he warned.
He emphasized the need for residents to cooperate with sanitation efforts and avoid practices that endanger public health and compromise environmental safety.
