Dreams FC coach Abdul Karim Zito believes the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) ban on Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium could serve as a wake-up call for the country’s football authorities.
CAF withdrew its approval of Baba Yara Stadium after highlighting “persistent issues” with the pitch, meaning Ghana is now likely to play their upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifying matches away from home.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been instructed to find an alternative venue outside Ghana for the fixtures.
According to Zito, the ban will push authorities to address the persistent issues that have plagued the stadium and other facilities in Ghana.
Zito, who also coaches the national U19 team, highlighted the impact poor pitches have on player performance, explaining that Black Stars players are used to top-quality pitches abroad, making them uncomfortable when playing at home.
“Our players are used to quality pitches outside, so they feel uncomfortable when they come home to play, as they are afraid of getting injured,” he told Joy Sports.
Reflecting on the Angola match, he pointed out how the poor pitch affected Abdul Mumin’s failed clearance, leading to a goal.
“For these reasons, I’m okay with the CAF ban because it will force us to do the right thing,” Zito added, expressing hope that this move will lead to much-needed improvements in Ghana’s football infrastructure.
