Professor of Enterprise Development at UCC Advocates for Entrepreneurship Models in Ghana

Professor Rosemond Aboagyewa Boohene, a distinguished Professor at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) School of Business, has put forth a series of recommendations for enhancing enterprise development in Ghana. As the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC, she emphasized the critical role of entrepreneurship in ensuring that Ghanaian enterprises remain competitive on the global stage.

Importance of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development for Economic Growth

In her inaugural lecture titled “Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in Practice: Tracking the Pathways,” Professor Aboagyewa Boohene highlighted the significance of entrepreneurship in driving economic growth. She stated, “Entrepreneurship and enterprise development are vital to every economy globally. They not only provide employment but also foster innovation and serve as a livelihood source for the majority of the population.”

Recommendations for Strengthening Ghanaian Enterprises

During her lecture, Prof. Aboagyewa Boohene proposed several key strategies for improving entrepreneurship in Ghana. She advocated for:

1. Entrepreneurship Training for Students in Ghana

Prof. Aboagyewa Boohene recommended implementing comprehensive entrepreneurship training programs for both secondary and tertiary institutions. She believes that equipping students with the skills to create their own job opportunities will address the country’s high unemployment rates.

2. Addressing Financial Barriers for Young Entrepreneurs

The Professor observed that many aspiring young female entrepreneurs face significant challenges due to limited access to financing. She called for increased financial support and resources to help these individuals start and grow their businesses.

3. Incorporating Diverse Skills in Educational Curricula

She proposed integrating a range of practical skills into educational programs, including military training, agricultural training, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship. By doing so, students will be better prepared to become successful business leaders and change-makers.

4. Government Support for Small Businesses and People with Disabilities

Prof. Aboagyewa Boohene urged the government to implement sustainable policies that support the growth of small businesses. She also emphasized the importance of supporting persons with disabilities (PwDs), who possess unique talents and skills that, if nurtured, could significantly contribute to national development.

Conclusion: A Call for Policy and Institutional Changes

Professor Rosemond Aboagyewa Boohene’s lecture underscored the need for systemic changes to support Ghana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. By advocating for enhanced training programs, financial support for young entrepreneurs, and inclusive policies for PwDs, she offers a comprehensive vision for advancing enterprise development in Ghana.
