The Ministry of Youth and Sports’ Chief Financial Officer has confirmed that the outstanding bonuses owed to the Black Queens will be settled today, February 22.
The women’s national team has been in the spotlight over the past day due to public outcry regarding the government’s delay in paying their bonuses for qualifying for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The team is owed approximately $180,000 for six games.
Assuring the team, the CFO stated that all unpaid bonuses would be cleared by 1 pm on Thursday. This payment is expected to boost morale ahead of their tie against Zambia’s Coppe Queens in the qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games.
In related remarks, Gifty Oware-Mensah, Chairperson for the Black Queens Management Committee and an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), highlighted disparities in treatment between the Black Queens and the Black Stars, suggesting preferential treatment for the latter due to their status as the GFA’s primary product.
Ghana is set to clash with Zambia in the first leg of the 2024 Olympic Games third-round qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, February 23, 2024.
Nora Hauptle’s squad has shown impressive form, winning 10 out of 11 matches and scoring 34 goals, while also securing qualification for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Despite their achievements, the Black Queens are still awaiting payment of bonuses totaling $7,500 from last year’s qualification matches.
