The Office of the President has refuted claims circulating on social media suggesting that the Presidency is orchestrating politically motivated changes within the hierarchy of the Armed Forces to utilise the military harshly during the upcoming December 7 general elections.
In a press release dated January 4, 2024, the Presidency addressed the allegations and clarified the nature of a meeting held on January 2, 2024.
The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, convened a meeting with Heads of Security agencies at Jubilee House on that date.
According to the statement, this meeting has become an annual feature on the President’s calendar at the beginning of each new year, where the Heads of Security agencies offer New Year wishes, and the President expresses appreciation for their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s peace and stability.
Contrary to the allegations, the Presidency emphasized that no discussions regarding politically motivated changes in the Armed Forces hierarchy occurred during the meeting.
The statement highlighted that changes in the Armed Forces’ leadership when they occur, are carried out by the Constitution and established conventions, free from political considerations.
The statement affirmed the Akufo-Addo-led administration’s commitment to uphold the Armed Forces’ professionalism and assured Ghanaians that the 2024 general elections would be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, without electoral violence.
It warned that entities or individuals attempting to disrupt the elections would be dealt with according to the country’s laws.
The release urged the public to dismiss unfounded speculations and publications aimed at triggering unrest within the Armed Forces.
