Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has rejected claims by President John Dramani Mahama and Minister Sam George regarding Ghana’s SIM registration. In a statement, she defended the 2022-2023 registration, asserting that 80% of biometric data matched the NIA database.
She criticized the current government for dismissing the previous exercise, emphasizing that every active SIM card is linked to a Ghana Card. Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful also accused the government of contradicting itself by using audit results from the previous exercise while claiming the data is invalid.
She urged the government to focus on the remaining 20% of the population who still need biometric verification, and reminded them that governance should build on progress, not erase it. Despite NIA’s previous restrictions on real-time verification, nearly 30 million SIM cards have been securely registered.
