Shamima Muslim, a broadcast journalist and founder of the Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA), believes Ghanaians will follow the example of the United Kingdom (UK) by voting out the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in December 2024. She emphasized that no political party should be rewarded for leading a country into crisis, citing the recent UK election where the incumbent Labour Party was voted out.
“Congratulations to the UK Labour Party for your landslide win. Indeed, no one should be rewarded for leading a country into crisis. We in Ghana are waiting to deliver an equally sobering verdict. We are inspired and convinced that it is possible to vote out the NPP. Ghana will be restored,” Ms. Muslim stated in reaction to news of the Labour Party’s victory, securing a majority of parliamentary seats in yesterday’s general elections.
The Labour Party has so far won 411 out of 650 parliamentary seats, surpassing the minimum of 326 needed to form a majority in Parliament. Meanwhile, their main opponent, the Conservatives, has secured 120 seats, leaving the Labour Party comfortably ahead as counting continues.
