Panic broke out at the Adjen Kotoku onion market in the Ga West Municipality after armed men reportedly stormed the area, escalating tensions linked to an ongoing dispute within the onion trading business.

The incident is believed to be connected to a power struggle among rival trader groups over the unloading and distribution of onion consignments at the market, one of Ghana’s key onion supply centres.

The development has raised concerns among traders and transporters, who fear the unrest could disrupt the supply of onions to Accra and other parts of the country, potentially affecting prices and livelihoods.

The tension comes amid fresh concerns from the Ghana Onion Sellers Association over the seizure of onion trucks from Niger through Nigeria, with the group alleging political interference in the trade.

Traders are calling for urgent security intervention to restore calm and protect business activities at the market, which became a major trading hub after the relocation of onion sellers from Agbogbloshie.
