According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the monetization of politics in Gana was started by the former minister of health Alex Segbefia.

His National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, in his opinion, adopted that behavior from the NPP.

“Bribery was a thing of the past between 1992 and 1996, and even up until 2000. I am firmly blaming the NPP for the significant commercialization of our system that occurred starting in 2004. To the extent that we are currently witnessing it, it was entirely an NPP construct.

“Unfortunately, the NDC has picked up certain negative behaviors. In response to a discussion about the GH $40 that former President John Dramani Mahama gave to each NDC delegate to help them get to the polling places for Saturday’s presidential and parliamentary primaries, he said on Key Points on TV3 on Saturday.

In a statement released by Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Mr. Mahama’s spokeswoman, “The Campaign believes supporting the delegates to travel to the centers will ensure a high voter turnout and every voter will be empowered to vote and return home without financial impediment in these difficult economic times,”

Martin Kpebu, a private attorney who participated in this discussion of the Key Points, remarked that the monetization of politics is a stain on Ghana’s democracy.

The elections are held to the highest bidder, the one with the most money being able to bid, which is a serious stain on our democracy, he claimed.
