The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare has emphatically said that no IGP can determine the outcome of any election.

He indicated that elections require collective action, and so nobody can determine the outcome.

The IGP was before Parliament’s Ad-hoc committee, tasked to investigate the authenticity of a leaked tape plotting to remove him from office responding to a question by the Committee’s Chair, Samuel Atta Akyea, in Parliament, on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

He explained that the most important thing is that, elections involve so many stakeholders, and each one has its role hence the police also has its role stressing that election is a simple matter, where each stakeholder plays its role, and collectively, we end up ensuring that it is over and the people then decide who becomes their leaders so, nobody has supremacy, when it comes to an entity or institution or when it comes to its role in ensuring that elections are successful.

He emphasized that, as far as he remains Ghana’s IGP, each stakeholder has to play its role in elections and since each role is unique, nobody can determine the outcome of any elections.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare also disagreed with the assessment of the former Director-General of Police Operations, COP George Alex Mensah, that he is the worst IGP in the history of Ghana.

He denoted that his administration, which includes COP Mensah, is working collectively to ensure that his team becomes the best in the history of the Police Service expressing that If he is the worst, then collectively, the leadership and the entire personnel of the police service are the worst, including COP Alex Mensah who was serving in that capacity as a member of the team that he leads and that it may be a slip of the tongue on the part of Mr. Alex Mensah.

The IGP mentioned some successes he has achieved for the service in connection with his leadership and the government of Ghana indicating his enormous contribution towards reducing armed robbery and other criminal cases on our roads and streets and how he has made the police service closer to the people through the creation of seven (7) other police regions to complement the existing regions for adequate security.
