The Ghana Bar Association (GBA), a leading professional body representing lawyers in the country, has called upon President Nana Akufo-Addo to intervene and put an end to the recent attacks on members of the judiciary and the legal profession by certain individuals affiliated with his political party.

The GBA, in a strongly worded statement, expressed deep concern over the rising instances of inflammatory and derogatory remarks targeting judges and lawyers. These attacks, originating from political quarters, not only undermine the integrity of the legal system but also pose a significant threat to the rule of law and the administration of justice in Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo, as the custodian of the constitution and the leader of the nation, holds a unique position to address this pressing issue. The GBA has urged the President to firmly condemn such attacks and take decisive actions to prevent further harm to the judiciary’s independence and the legal profession’s reputation.

The legal profession plays a critical role in upholding justice, fairness, and the protection of human rights. These values are the pillars on which a democratic nation thrives. The GBA has emphasized that any attempts to undermine the judicial system or intimidate legal practitioners can have far-reaching consequences for the entire society.

The GBA’s call for intervention comes in light of recent incidents where judges have been subjected to unwarranted criticism, leading to concerns over the erosion of public trust in the judiciary. It is imperative that the necessary steps are taken to restore faith in the justice system and ensure that judges can carry out their duties without fear or favor.

The Ghana Bar Association firmly believes that an independent and impartial judiciary is crucial for the preservation of democracy, the protection of citizens’ rights, and the promotion of the rule of law. Therefore, it urges President Akufo-Addo to unequivocally condemn any attacks on the judiciary and the legal profession, reiterating the government’s commitment to upholding the constitutional principles that guarantee the separation of powers.

In concluding their statement, the Ghana Bar Association has offered its support and cooperation to President Akufo-Addo in addressing this matter and in taking the necessary measures to maintain the independence of the judiciary and safeguard the legal profession.
