Ibrahim Mahama, the founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) and the Red Clay Studio in Tamale, has accused a group believed to be members of the IGP’s Special Operations Team, commonly known as “Black Maria,” of assaulting him.
The attack allegedly left Mahama with dental injuries, including the loss of a tooth, while his uncle, who was driving at the time, also sustained injuries. Mahama received treatment at Habana Hospital and has since been discharged, but he is expected to undergo further dental care due to damage to two of his teeth.
In a telephone interview with Channel One News, Mahama described the incident, which occurred during a traffic situation caused by the Eid prayers at a school near the Mariam Hotel. He claims that the assault was carried out by members of the “Black Maria” team, who were recently redeployed from the region.
However, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, Commander of the IGP’s Special Operations Team, denied his unit’s involvement. In a phone interview, Jalil acknowledged that his team was in Tamale for the Eid al-Fitr celebrations but stated that they were not responsible for the alleged assault. He suggested that the attack might have been carried out by local youth, rather than his team, despite their presence at the scene.
