Summary Report: Sensitization Program on Trafficking at Asesewa Secondary School

 

On October 4th, a sensitization program on human trafficking was conducted at Asesewa Secondary School, organized by Engage Now Africa in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, National Headquarters and Economic Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

 

This initiative aimed to educate students about the risks and realities of trafficking, fostering awareness and prevention strategies in the community.

The program began with a comprehensive overview of human trafficking, including its definition, types, and prevalence in Ghana.

 

Participants learned about the various methods traffickers use to exploit vulnerable individuals, emphasizing the importance of awareness in preventing such crimes.

The discussion highlighted that education plays a vital role in equipping young people with the knowledge to recognize and respond to trafficking situations.

 

Central to the program was the exploration of the 4Ps framework: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, and Partnership, which are essential components in combating trafficking.

 

In terms of prevention, the program stressed the importance of community awareness campaigns and education in schools.

 

Students were encouraged to recognize and report suspicious activities, fostering a culture of vigilance and support within their communities.

 

Protection for victims was another key focus, with discussions on the necessary support services and legal aid available to those affected by trafficking.

Participants learned about the importance of creating safe environments for victims, ensuring they receive the assistance they need to recover and reintegrate into society.

 

The program also addressed the prosecution of traffickers, emphasizing the legal frameworks in place to address trafficking offenses.

 

The role of law enforcement and the judiciary in ensuring justice for victims was underscored, highlighting the need for effective collaboration between these entities to hold offenders accountable.

 

Finally, the importance of partnership was discussed, with a focus on collaboration between various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations.

 

Engage Now Africa and the Ghana Police Service reaffirmed their commitment to working together in the fight against trafficking, demonstrating that a united approach is crucial for success.

Overall, the sensitization program at Asesewa Secondary School successfully raised awareness about human trafficking among students.

 

By educating them on the risks and providing information on the 4Ps framework, the initiative aimed to empower young individuals to become advocates for prevention and protection within their communities. Continued efforts and partnerships are essential to effectively combat trafficking in all its forms.

 

Engage Now Africa and the Ghana Police Service will follow up with additional educational workshops and community outreach initiatives to further strengthen awareness and action against human trafficking in the region.

The Director in charge of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Ghana Police Service took the time to explain the 4Ps of Human Trafficking. During the panel discussion Madam Lydia Ohenewa stressed one of Engage Now Africa’s counseling of survivors and giving opportunity to survivors to go to school or enroll in skills training.

 

The Eastern Regional Representative was also given the opportunity to give the opening address and in his address he stressed on the importance of education and empowerment of the youth which is at the center of Engage Now Africa’s mission.

 

The head of the Anti-Human trafficking Unit, Economic and Organized Crime (EOCO) also addressed those in attendance.

 

He made mention of the need for collaboration and partnership to help fight Human Trafficking in our part of the world.
