Six individuals have been arrested by police in Kumawu, Ashanti Region, for attacking a police officer at a checkpoint, according to a press release from the Public Affairs Directorate of the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The suspects, identified as Edward Boateng, Evans Addo, Yaw Kusi, Michael Owusu, Yaw Boateng, and Emmanuel Mensah, along with one other individual who is currently at large, arrived at the Wono Akotsosu checkpoint in an overloaded taxi. When one of the three police officers on duty attempted to search the car, the suspects attacked him in an effort to prevent the search.
After a reinforcement team responded to the incident, six of the suspects were arrested, while the last one is still being sought by the police. Both the attacked police officer, who sustained a knee injury, and one of the suspects who was also injured, were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, two of the police officers on duty with the attacked officer, No. 58741 G/Constable Isaac Boiatey and No. 61963 G/Constable Evans Owusu, have been interdicted for their apparent failure to rescue their colleague, subdue the attackers, and make arrests. They have been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation into their professional conduct.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty, particularly in the current climate of heightened tensions and violence. The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to protecting officers and enforcing the law, and is calling on the public to assist in identifying and apprehending the remaining suspect
