The Senya Beraku Artists represent a remarkable group of determined and talented youth who are wholeheartedly dedicated to placing Senya Beraku on the musical map. However, their journey is not without challenges, as the necessary support for their craft remains somewhat elusive. Despite this, they bear the responsibility of making Senya the focal point of their musical endeavours.

While I earnestly hope that the much-needed support reaches them, I also believe there is a fundamental aspect that some of these artists may need to address.

First and foremost, music is a truly unique art form that weaves into the very fabric of every society. It serves as a vehicle for achieving three critical objectives for any culture:

1. Preservation of Culture and Its Values:

Music offers the most accessible means of preserving the cultural heritage of a people. Senya Beraku boasts a rich and magnificent culture that has been handed down through the generations. It is the duty of the present generation to both conserve this culture in its authentic form and infuse it with necessary innovations to keep it relevant in contemporary society. Therefore, Senya music artists must not only master their craft but also delve into the culture, using their music as a means of preserving its core values. The significance of this preservation cannot be overstated, as the loss of historical knowledge threatens the identity and legacy of a people.

While some artists have made commendable efforts in this regard, there is still ample room for further contributions and improvements.

2. Promotion of Culture and Community:

The task of promoting culture falls squarely on the shoulders of musicians and other artistic forms. Senya Beraku Artists must rise to the occasion and use their music as a powerful tool to celebrate the unique traditions, festivals, and stories of Senya Beraku. In doing so, they not only entertain but also educate and raise awareness about their rich cultural heritage.

3. Presentation of Culture, People, and Values:

Music provides a platform for effectively presenting the culture, people, and values of Senya Beraku. Through their musical creations, these artists can introduce their community to a broader audience. Collaborating with fellow artists, organising cultural events, and employing various media can help showcase the beauty and uniqueness of Senya Beraku to the world.

It’s crucial to emphasize that Senya Beraku possesses a rich tradition of traditional music and unique forms of singing. These invaluable traditions should not be discarded in favour of foreign or borrowed musical styles. The authentic musical culture of Senya must be rekindled and celebrated, such as the Adu-ebi (Asafo) war songs, the Adobawo music, Ikokonba, apatampa, ompe, etc.

A native of Senya should be able to immediately recognise Senya music not only by the language it’s sung in but also by the distinctive characteristics that make it truly and authentically Senyan. This recognition extends to the attire worn, the manner in which the song is sung, including the rhythm, accompanied instruments, and the accompanying dance form. These elements collectively form an integral part of Senya’s cultural identity and should be preserved and celebrated in the music created by Senya Beraku Artists.

Ceteris Paribus, Nigerians have made us to know better that artistes who passionately incorporate their cultural identity into their craft can truly stand out. As expressed by a prominent Senya war leader, Torpi Kojo Otu Anderson, “A goat cannot compete with the fish in a swimming competition.” He said this in the context that Senya music artistes can truly shine on a broader stage when they infuse their music with the distinct essence of Senya culture.

In conclusion, the Senya Beraku Artists hold a pivotal role in preserving, promoting, and presenting the culture, people, and values of their community through their music. While they may face numerous challenges on their journey, their unwavering dedication and remarkable talent have the potential to leave a lasting impact. With the right support and an unwavering focus on these essential aspects, they can significantly contribute to the cultural enrichment and global recognition of Senya Beraku. This is a responsibility they bear with pride and purpose, and it is through their music that the world can come to appreciate the wonders of Senya B
