Sandro Tonali, a midfielder for Newcastle and Italy, has been banned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for ten months for breaking betting regulations.

This summer, Sandro Tonali became Newcastle’s second-most expensive acquisition ever.

Should Italy qualify for Euro 2024, the 23-year-old will not be allowed to play again until August and will not be able to participate.

For £55 million, Tonali left AC Milan to join Newcastle in July.

Nicolo Fagioli, a midfield player for Juventus, was banned for seven months by the FIGC earlier this month for violating betting regulations.

Fagioli was fined 12,500 euros (£10,850) and had five months of his one-year term postponed.

In order to address his gambling problem, he also consented to a minimum six-month rehabilitation schedule.

On October 12, Tonali and fellow midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo—who is on loan at Aston Villa from Galatasaray—were told they were the subject of an Italian prosecution’s inquiry, and as a result, they were compelled to leave Italy’s training camp.

Tonali led Milan to their first Serie A championship in eleven years in 2021–22 and the Champions League semifinals the previous season during a three-year tenure at San Siro.

He entered the game late in Newcastle’s 1-0 Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Since being signed by the Magpies as their second-most expensive acquisition, Tonali has made 12 appearances for Eddie Howe’s team.

Sixth-place Newcastle United in the Premier League will visit Wolves on Saturday before playing Manchester United in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday.
