President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged the Black Stars with the mission to bring home the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in 2023.
The president delivered this directive during a farewell dinner held in Kumasi on Wednesday, January 10, 2023, as the Black Stars prepared for their departure to Cote d’Ivoire.
The event, attended by dignitaries such as Mr. Mustapha Ussif, Youth and Sports Minister; Mr. Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister; and Mr. Seth Adjei Baah, Board Chairman of the Ghana Tourism Authority, saw President Akufo-Addo extending his best wishes to the team for a successful AFCON journey.
Acknowledging Ghana’s decades-long quest for the AFCON trophy, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in the current squad’s ability to clinch victory.
He encouraged the players to approach the tournament with a determined mindset, emphasizing the possibility of realizing the long-awaited dream.
The farewell dinner, a colorful ceremony attended by representatives from the corporate and entertainment sectors, featured performances by Afropop and Dancehall artist Stonebwoy.
Rising star Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, known for Singathon fame, set the tone by singing the national anthem to welcome President Akufo-Addo.
The Black Stars are set to commence their AFCON campaign against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, followed by matches against Egypt and Mozambique in subsequent group games.
The nation awaits with anticipation as the team embarks on its journey to secure AFCON glory.
