Ghana coach Otto Addo has admitted that winning away games in Africa is incredibly difficult, which further underscores the disaster of dropping points at home.
This reflection comes in the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years, following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Angola on Friday.
The Black Stars had an opportunity to stay in contention for a place in the tournament after witnessing Niger defeat Sudan the previous day.
However, despite taking the lead against Angola with a stunning free-kick from Jordan Ayew, they could only manage a draw, effectively declaring them eliminated from the competition.
In his post-match comments, Addo acknowledged the importance of winning home games in these tournaments.
“In general, we have to look at all the games we played, especially our home games. We lost to Angola, where we were better.
In these tournaments, you have to win your home games; very, very important. And if you don’t win, it is always difficult to play away and try to win because every nation is strong at home,” he stated.
Looking ahead, the four-time African champions will now face Niger in their final game of the qualifiers. With their elimination confirmed, they will aim to at least secure a victory and regain some pride as they prepare for upcoming matches.
