In a significant development, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Convention People’s Party (CPP), All People’s Congress (APC), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) have jointly filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission of Ghana. The suit aims to challenge the EC’s decision to restrict centers for the upcoming Limited Voter Registration exercise solely to their district offices, deeming it both unlawful and unreasonable.
The political parties firmly believe that the EC’s decision has the potential to disenfranchise a significant number of eligible voters, denying them their constitutional right to be registered and participate in public elections. As a result, they have promptly filed an Application for Interlocutory Injunction in an effort to halt the EC from proceeding with the announced limited voter registration exercise until the substantive matter is finally determined.
This lawsuit marks the first step in a series of actions intended to compel the EC to conduct the impending limited voter registration exercise at the electoral area level. The parties argue that this approach would enable all eligible voters to access the registration process in accordance with the principles outlined in Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution, Regulation 2(1)(2) of C.I 91, and the EC’s longstanding practices.
In an unexpected turn of events, the Plaintiffs have been informed by the Registrar of the Supreme Court that the date for the Application for Interlocutory Injunction to be moved will be provided on Monday, following the Chief Justice of the Republic’s explicit instructions.
While the legal proceedings unfold, the writ has already been served on the Electoral Commission, initiating the formal process of addressing the parties’ concerns.
As the case progresses, the parties remain committed to upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring that all eligible voters in Ghana have equal access to the limited voter registration exercise. They anticipate a fair and just resolution to the matter, facilitating a transparent and inclusive electoral process for all citizens.
