It is important to recognize that both men and women can serve as spiritual mentors and benefit from having a spiritual mentor of the same or opposite gender. However, it is equally important to acknowledge the unique role of spiritual mothers in mentoring young girls into spiritual maturity. The idea of a spiritual father or mother is not about gender but rather about having a mentor, guide, or role model who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement in one’s spiritual journey.

The concept of spiritual motherhood has been around for centuries, and it is a vital part of many spiritual traditions. A spiritual mother is someone who serves as a guide, mentor, and source of wisdom and inspiration for others on their spiritual journey. She can offer a nurturing and supportive presence, helping to build confidence and self-esteem, while providing guidance and counsel.

By modeling kindness, compassion, and empathy, spiritual mothers can help to create a sense of belonging and acceptance, which can be particularly important for young women who may be struggling to find their place in the world. They can also provide a model of healthy relationships, helping young women to learn to value themselves and others and to establish healthy boundaries in their relationships, especially in the area of marriage and relating to in-laws.

On this note, we pray and suggest young ladies should identify a spiritual mother (not necessarily their biological mother) but a God-fearing, spirit-filled, humble woman of God who can mentor and give guidance in this journey of life. Spiritual mothers can offer a unique and invaluable perspective and support system that can help young women navigate the challenges of life and grow in their faith.

The book of Titus charges older women, who can be described as spiritual mothers, to not only show young girls the right things to do but more importantly be the right example to them:

“The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.” (Titus 2:3-5)

Therefore, it is important to recognize and celebrate the unique role of spiritual mothers in mentoring young girls into spiritual maturity. Both men and women can serve as spiritual mentors, and both can benefit from having a spiritual mentor of the same or opposite gender. We pray that the Lord leads young ladies to identify a great spiritual mother who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement on their journey of life.
