The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended operations of three radio stations belonging to Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The affected stations include:
-
Wontumi Radio 95.9 FM in Accra
-
Wontumi Radio 101.3 FM in Kumasi
-
Wontumi Radio 101.3 FM in Takoradi
According to the NCA, these stations violated several broadcasting regulations, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operation from unapproved transmitter locations.
The suspensions came after the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama to allow defaulting stations to rectify their infractions. Wontumi Multimedia reportedly failed to fully comply during the amnesty period.
The NCA invoked Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), which prohibits the operation of broadcasting services without a valid Certificate of Compliance.
In addition to the Wontumi stations, six other radio stations across the country have also been shut down for ignoring the opportunity to take corrective actions during the grace period.
The NCA emphasized its continued commitment to enforcing broadcasting regulations and maintaining lawful operation within Ghana’s media space.
