The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has assured that all households impacted by recent flooding in the Volta and sections of the Eastern Regions will receive necessary aid to recover from the disaster.

During an inspection of relief items geared towards assisting those affected by the controlled spillage from the Akosombo Dam, the assurance was delivered. The relief provisions, comprising toiletries, bags of rice and sugar, medications, plastic buckets with bowls, mattresses, canned foods, and drinking water, aim to aid those severely affected by the rising floodwaters.

Nana Agyeman-Prempeh, the Director General of NADMO, underscored the organization’s unwavering commitment to coordinate response efforts during the inspection of the relief items on October 27, 2023. He emphasized that disasters do not distinguish among tribes, political affiliations, or religions, urging unity and support for those grappling with the harsh realities of climate change.

“At NADMO, our commitment remains steadfast in coordinating all response efforts to manage disasters. They strike without regard for tribe, political affiliation, or religion. Let us unite and support our fellow community members affected by this flooding due to the stark realities of climate change,” he stated.

The brief ceremony was attended by key officials, including Deputy Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, Deputy Director for NADMO, Seji Saji, the District Chief Executive Officer (DCE), Osborn Divin Fenu, and other distinguished dignitaries.

Madam Fatimatu Abubakar highlighted the government’s deep concern for the safety of affected residents. Urgent measures have been taken to ensure their safety, including the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate and respond promptly to the flood-impacted areas.

Background:

The flood, caused by controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, has led to significant challenges in the affected areas, including power outages, infrastructure damage, and threats to residents’ lives.

This event has disrupted access to communities, with roads being severed, leaving commuters stranded. Some have resorted to using boats and canoes, further endangering their lives. The most affected communities are in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region, where the Akosombo Dam is situated, as well as in the North, Central, and South Tongu districts in the Volta Region.

The dam spillage was necessitated by high inflows into the Akosombo reservoir, causing the water level to exceed its upper limit. This action was taken to prevent the water from overtopping and compromising the dam’s integrity.
