Some inhabitants and well-wishers of the Nabango village in the Upper East region’s Kassena Nankana west District have mobilized resources to show their love and care for the area’s elderly and frail by giving them food and other help.

The elderly who are at least 60 years old gathered in one location to receive the assistance in a joyful attitude that has been missing from their old age for some time.

Brother Atinsunga, a member of the community support team, stated:

“As citizens and residents of this town, we realized the need of at least appreciating the elderly who are living alone and used today to recognize their contributions to the country. We as a group will do our possible best to ensure we reach out to them periodically and in time so they will not feel dejected and rejected,” he noted.

Another group member, William Abittor, urged the elderly to remain courageous and to support the young people and upcoming adolescents in their efforts to work as passionately as they (the elderly) did during their active working years.

The recipients acknowledged their gratitude for the community support team’s appreciation of their services to society and stated their joy at being remembered.

The beneficiaries requested that the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program be extended to them by the ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection in order to help them with their problems.

In order to reduce immediate poverty and promote long-term human capital development, the LEAP offers cash assistance and health insurance to severely low-income households throughout Ghana.

A single beneficiary takes GH₵64 monthly while two and three beneficiaries in a household take GH₵76 and GH₵88 respectively.

The meeting’s guest of honor, Dr. Joseph Ayimbila, expressed gratitude for the gesture and urged other members of the community to support it because retiree problems cannot be fully addressed by government policies for the elderly.
