The Honourable Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for directing its Members of Parliament to boycott parliamentary proceedings. The directive, issued by NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has sparked widespread debate amidst an ongoing constitutional standoff between the Supreme Court and Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, over the balance of power between the judiciary and legislature.

In an interview with Kwame Adinka on Pure FM, Ursula Owusu, a seasoned lawyer and political figure, condemned the NDC’s stance, describing it as a dangerous precedent. “The NDC seems determined to escalate this issue unnecessarily, and their actions have far-reaching implications,” she remarked.

The Minister highlighted the importance of maintaining harmony among the three arms of government—executive, judiciary, and legislature. According to her, the NDC’s decision to defy the Supreme Court’s rulings undermines the very foundation of governance. “Flouting a directive from the judiciary threatens the stability of our system. Governance requires cooperation, not defiance,” she emphasized.

Ursula Owusu also addressed the critical role of Members of Parliament, reminding them of their duty to represent their constituents faithfully. She argued that boycotting parliamentary duties on party orders amounts to neglecting the people’s mandate. “Parliament is the platform where the voices of citizens are heard. To abandon that responsibility is to betray those who elected you,” she stated.

The Communications Minister called on voters to hold their MPs accountable for such actions. “Any MP who willingly neglects their responsibilities doesn’t deserve re-election. Voters must assess their representatives’ actions critically,” she urged.

Her remarks come at a time when the nation’s political landscape is rife with tension, further amplifying calls for responsible leadership and adherence to democratic principles.
