Following earlier incidences, a lot of money was exchanged at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries on Saturday, confirming the monetization of politics in Ghana.
For instance, a candidate in Ejura Sekyedumase in the Ashanti region showered delegates with cash but fell short in the vote to become the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
A number of reports of delegates stealing money from candidates surfaced; as a result, some reporters on Onua TV reported the problem.
However, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the party’s national chairman, expressed pleasure with the outcome after several candidates lost the election despite spending a lot of money.
He saw the outcome as demonstrating the superiority of the foot soldier. Who becomes who in the NDC, according to him, is no longer dictated by wealth.
“This election has proven the might of the party’s footsoldiers. After the EC announced the results of the primaries, he added, “One noteworthy thing that we learned is that money cannot determine who wins the votes in NDC anymore.
“We heard stories about big men, possibly wealthy men who could win elections,” the national chairman of the NDC remarked. Despite their immense fortune and the rumors we heard about the things they threatened to distribute, none of them could win.
Franklin Fifi Kwetey, general secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has indicated that the party’s victorious primaries are the first stage in their plan to unseat the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is now in power.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, May 14, 2023, immediately following the announcement of the results, Mr. Kwetey gave the nation’s citizens and supporters of the umbrella fraternity the assurance that the NDC will save Ghana from the subpar governance of the Akufo-Addo led administration.
The former president is the party’s flagbearer, and he claims that the confidence placed in them would not be in vain because they will do everything in their power to protect Ghana from the poor leadership the NPP has given Ghanaians.
For us, this marks the start of the road to 2024, and we want to reassure all of our supporters throughout our nation, as well as the larger population of Ghana, that we will undoubtedly make sure that this is just the beginning of a long journey to ensure that we can save this nation by December 7, 2024.
“We are going to do everything possible to ensure that the confidence that is reposed not just in the leadership of the party but through this election, the confidence that has been reposed in His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, that confidence is not to go down at all,” he said.
Former President John Dramani Mahama was duly elected on Saturday, May 13, with an astounding 98.9% of the vote.
