Lawyer and human rights advocate Martin Kpebu has expressed doubt that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill of 2021, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, will become law under President Akufo-Addo. According to Kpebu, the bill’s path to becoming law is hindered by the Supreme Court’s tight schedule for reviewing the bill’s constitutionality.
Kpebu explained that given the current legal calendar, the Supreme Court may not have sufficient time to address the case in a manner that would allow President Akufo-Addo to sign the bill into law.
“It would take a miracle for this bill to become law,” Kpebu stated. “Lawyers are going on vacation and will only handle emergency cases, and this gay bill does not qualify as an emergency.
The court will not resume hearings until mid-October, and there are still several procedural steps before a final decision is made. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the bill will become law.”
Recently, the Supreme Court postponed its ruling on whether Parliament had the authority to send the anti-gay bill to the President for his assent.
