NDC Deputy Communications Officer Challenges Finance Minister’s Claim Regarding IMF Agreement
Malik Basintale, Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called into question assertions made by Ghana’s Finance Minister regarding the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement in relation to the anti-gay legislation.
In response to the Finance Ministry’s plea to the President not to sign the bill passed by Parliament, Basintale expressed skepticism during an appearance on Accra-based TV3. He emphasized that despite reviewing the agreement multiple times, he found no provisions indicating that the passage of anti-LGBTQ laws would jeopardize the IMF agreement.
Basintale challenged the basis for claims made by Alhaji Amin Antah, MP for Karaga, suggesting a link between the anti-gay legislation and potential termination of the IMF agreement. He argued that the agreement lacks any clause related to LGBTQ issues, refuting the notion that such legislation would impact Ghana’s financial agreements.
Furthermore, Basintale criticized the prioritization of a proposed $3 billion loan over addressing significant issues highlighted in the Auditor General’s report, which revealed substantial financial irregularities in the public sector. He condemned the notion of sacrificing principles for financial gain, suggesting that if adherence to LGBTQ rights jeopardizes financial deals, it may be time to reconsider the nation’s priorities.
In his impassioned remarks, Basintale questioned the integrity of those advocating for the preservation of financial agreements at the expense of human rights, urging a reevaluation of Ghana’s values and commitments.
