A young believer recently reached out to me, seeking guidance on a particular sin she was struggling with. As we talked, I encouraged her to turn away from that sin because as believers, what we do not have peace about is surely not the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Later, she shared her decision with a friend who responded by saying, “This is your guilty conscience, not the Holy Spirit.” This made me wonder if people truly understand what it means to live a guilt-free life and not let a guilty conscience control them. These statements do not mean that we should not care about our actions and the impact they have on ourselves and others.

While it is true that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), it is also true that grace will not lead us to live unrighteously. Faith will not lead us to spiritual apathy or carelessness. Moreover, the Holy Spirit will not lead us to a place where we lack peace. Therefore, if we find that our peace is disturbed, we must take action and seek the Lord’s guidance.

Ignoring the leading of the Holy Spirit can have serious consequences, both now and in the future. It is not merely a matter of having a guilty conscience, but rather of trusting in God rather than in our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). So let us strive to live in a way that pleases the Lord and trust in Him to guide us into all truth and right living.
