Following his team’s exciting 4-3 victory over Tottenham last month, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp made some comments against referee Paul Tierney, for which he has been given a two-match suspension.
The German will thus not play against Aston Villa on Sunday at Anfield.
If the German coach does not violate the rules again, the second game is postponed until the end of the 2023–24 season.
Klopp was unhappy as was clearly evident in his post-game interview. Klopp had wildly celebrated Liverpool’s stoppage-time goal before getting cautioned.
“How they could foul Mohamed Salah [before to Tottenham’s third goal].
We’ve had a history with [Paul] Tierney, but I have no idea what he has against us. He claims there are no issues, but that can’t be the case.
“I don’t know why he looks at me the way he does. Since these events are so complex and difficult to comprehend, nobody in England is required to explain them.
While it’s true that my celebration was unnecessary, what he said to me after giving me the yellow card was unacceptable.
The statement from the Football Association said;
“Jurgen Klopp has received a £75,000 fine and a two-match touchline suspension as a result of statements he made to the media following Liverpool’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on April 30, 2023.
“The manager’s touchline punishment for the first match is effective right away, and the second is deferred until the end of the 2023–24 season under the condition that he doesn’t violate FA Rule E3 during that time.
“Jurgen Klopp acknowledged that his remarks about the match referee during post-match media interviews were illegal conduct because they implied prejudice, called into question the official’s integrity, were direct and inflammatory, and brought dishonor upon the game.
Following a subsequent hearing, “an independent Regulatory Commission imposed these sanctions.”
