The Kathy Knowles Community Library (KKCL), located in Osu, Accra, has collaborated with various organizations to organize a reading clinic, aimed at nurturing a love for reading among children who visit the library.
The primary objective of the clinic is to enhance the children’s reading skills and comprehension abilities, ultimately improving their academic performance.
Madam Joana Felih, the Head Librarian at KKCL, stated that the reading clinic is an annual event, welcoming guests from Ghana and around the world to inspire children to read more and pursue their aspirations.
Collaborating organizations such as the Learn To Read Foundation, Standout Care, Accra Legacy Virtual Leo-lions Lions Club, and Ashesi Leo Club have joined forces to make the reading clinic a success.
The activities at the clinic include engaging story time sessions, sentence formation exercises, brain games, and informative health talks.
Madam Felih emphasized that the library, established on November 13, 1992, by Mrs. Kathy Knowles, has a fundamental mission of promoting literacy and cultivating a love for reading among children. Additionally, the library offers free ICT lessons and adult literacy classes.
Ms. Rejoice Sefakor Adzivor, the Executive Director of the Learn to Read Foundation, shared that many children do not read much or visit libraries. Therefore, through events like the reading clinic, the foundation aims to educate children on the importance of reading and provide them with learning materials.
Mr. Patrick Fynn, Team Lead of Standout Care, a Non-Governmental Organization focused on community medical outreach programs, educated the children on healthy habits, including oral hygiene and nutrition. He also distributed deworming medication to combat worm infestations, which commonly affect children.
Madam Anita Boakye-Yiadom, President of the Accra Legacy Virtual Leo-lions Club, expressed that their club is dedicated to empowering children to develop a reading habit and supports them by providing reading materials.
William Maalo Dery, a frequent visitor to the Kathy Knowles Community Library, expressed his delight at the event and expressed his desire to participate in future clinics.
