Kasoa, April 7, 2026 — Hundreds of traders at the Kasoa Old Market in the Central Region have been displaced following the demolition of a section of the market by the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly to pave the way for a redevelopment project.
The demolition exercise affected several temporary structures and stalls used by traders for their daily business activities, leaving many of them stranded and uncertain about their next source of income.
The latest development follows weeks of tension at the market, where traders had earlier protested plans by the Assembly to clear parts of the old market for the construction of permanent lockable shops under a redevelopment initiative.
Some affected traders have raised concerns over the exercise, arguing that the demolition has disrupted their livelihoods and deepened their hardship. They have also appealed to government and local authorities to intervene and provide a suitable alternative trading space.
The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly has maintained that the exercise forms part of efforts to modernise and reorganise the market to improve trading conditions in the area.
At the time of filing this report, some traders were still at the scene salvaging items from the debris as uncertainty remains over the next phase of the redevelopment and possible relocation arrangements for affected persons.
