In a recent statement, Member of Parliament for the Assin South constituency, John Ntim Fordjour, has sharply criticized President John Dramani Mahama for what he termed a “dangerous double standard” on LGBTQ+ issues. Fordjour’s remarks, which came during a public address, focused on the President’s contrasting positions on LGBTQ+ rights within Ghana and abroad.

Fordjour pointed out that while Mahama has been outspoken against the promotion of LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana, calling it an issue that goes against the country’s cultural values, he has seemingly shifted to a more cautious and procedural approach when speaking on the matter in international forums. The MP noted that Mahama’s statements abroad have been less definitive, causing confusion among the public about his true stance on the controversial issue.

Fordjour emphasized the importance of consistency in leadership, particularly on is8sues that have such significant cultural and social implications for Ghanaian society. He urged President Mahama to clarify his position and adopt a clear and firm stance on the matter, both at home and abroad, to avoid undermining the nation’s values and policies.

“The country deserves clarity on this matter. Leadership should be about consistency and standing firm in our values. We cannot afford to send mixed signals on such a critical issue,” Fordjour added.

The LGBTQ+ debate has been a sensitive topic in Ghana, with both politicians and citizens expressing strong views on the subject. Mahama’s government had initially opposed the legalization of LGBTQ+ rights during his presidency, but in recent years, there has been an increase in international pressure for the country to reconsider its stance.

As the discourse continues, it is expected that President Mahama will address the concerns raised by Fordjour and other stakeholders, as the issue remains a divisive one within both the political and public spheres.
